Whoa dude totally honored.

(I was hoping someone would have made a gif of the one dude on Firefly talking about his honor, but no one has yet obliged.)

It’s your fault for being shiny.  How was I to resist?  I have had those same damn feels when people manage to splash their Sally hate onto my dash.

I dislike the idea that an officer of the law is under some obligation to be cuddly and incurious.

Or completely cool with being undermined by a consultant who sees fit to shout her business all up and down the street to score points.

Also, considering that Sherlock called John an idiot within hours of meeting him, without provocation, do people really think Donovan was the one who started the whole name-calling thing?

YOU ARE SO COOL.

Pardon me. But. Hating Sally is a thing? Really? NOT SEEN IT. HAPPY THAT WAY. I had her kiss Mycroft, steal his coat, and get away with it. I just don’t see why.. okay, envy, yes, I could hate her like that, but… She’s not boring. How can you hate her? (Yeah, I can see how people could, but I don’t follow people like that.) It’s kind of a lazy viewpoint.

Also, when someone said “people of colour,” and… I just took a long time to figure out WTF. I just don’t think of Sally as black. Or female. I think of her as Sally. Um. I don’t think of the other characters as white dudes. They have names. Um. I just don’t take score cards to my TV. Um. BUT BY GOLLY IF THERE IS A WAY TO WORK GINA TORRES INTO SOMETHING SIGN ME THE HELL UP ahem. But yeah, I just don’t… notice that stuff until someone else has a rant. Um? Er.

IF YOU WANT TO CAST SHEMAR MOORE AS LESTRADE I AM SO FINE WITH THAT I’ll shut up now.

When I look at magazines or watch TV or whatever else, I sometimes have these overwhelming moments of “NO ONE LOOKS LIKE ME.”  Because I’m not even particularly that Asian-looking, but I’m definitely not white.  And it’s awful.  So when I see people of color on TV or in movies or in magazines, no matter what race they are, I feel better.  Like, maybe biracial women aren’t being featured, but at least someone who is something other than white is.  It’s an awful, creepy, soul-sucking feeling sometimes, but it is what it is.

WELL SCREW THAT BABY. COME HERE AND HUG IT OUT, BITCH.

No, you’re not Asian-looking. I kinda got the idea that you like Japan, you’ve been there, but… I just didn’t know. I just want to cut out all the middle stages. I don’t want to work our way up to even representation, etc. I just want to cut ahead to the bit where no one else even notices or thinks about it. “People look different in different places. Hurrah. Next?” You know?

I’ve never really been a minority. I was American in London - which even then, I didn’t feel like a minority. I just… YOU ARE JUST SO EVA THAT I DON’T EVEN. You’re Eva. You’re just… Eva. I do not want you to be creeped or soul-sucked. I want you to just WHEEE at the SHINY!!!!! etc. :[

I’d love the world to just be in that stage, but it’s not.  And, unfortunately, institutional racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia/all that other shit is not a problem that goes away if right-thinking people ignore it.

My longterm plan is only slightly more active than ignoring it. In my Mystrade fic, you will never see sexuality brought up as a plot point. In that world, IT IS NOT AN ISSUE. And if anyone ever picked up on this, or does in the future, it’s because that is the way I want that world to be. I was writing this before Gatiss said his famous quote about “softly softly” and Torchwood and how he looked forward to seeing a show where “the detective” came home and his husband said “How was work?” I am on that page already, Mr Gatiss. I’m writing Mystrade that way, because it should be. In a world with two such fierce, intelligent men, that’s how it should be. That is the world they deserve, the world that deserves them. I’m the god of that world, so… so shall it be.

That’s the FICTION I want, where there just happen to be people of types all over.  The WORLD I want is one where we can actually recognize that there’s still this huge, gigantic problem that we have to deal with, because let me just say, calling things “post-racial” and then casting all white people in stories that are about people who aren’t white (Airbender, 21) or making stories about other countries/races as told through the lens of the white hero (Dances with Wolves, Last Samurai) and shit like that is just.  Something has to change.

And apparently we were all about wearing blackface at the Oscars.  I mean, seriously?  This is the United States.  We, uh, we know what blackface is and what it means and what it meant and the whole big damn history of it.  We lived it.  We’re apparently still living it.

This is why I went on a huge Mystrade snark last night.  AUGH.  Maybe I will again.

Okay, does it help if I clarify that I am hoping that showing it in fiction will make it come true? Moffat can make bowties cool, he can make tweed sell, he can rule the fashion world via Sherlock. Capt. Jack Harkness, on a kids’ TV show. There is a power in fiction, and I want to wear people down with exposure to a world where it is just Accepted. It’s another reason I keep my Mystrade as free of porn as I can, because I want it to be mainstream in every POSSIBLE way, and just slide it on in there. I want to make this so believable that people forget it’s fiction, and just plain subvert their thinking. I don’t want to have college classes where we talk about if/how/maybe/what/who etc. I just want to get in there and start making it true by DOING this stuff.
